Jagannath Yatra (जगन्नाथ यात्रा)

Jagannath Yatra (जगन्नाथ यात्रा) or the procession of Lord Jagannath is celebrated on the second day (द्वितीया) of the waxing moon phase in the month of Aasadh (आषाढ़) or June/July.

The origin of the featival is described in Skandh Puraan (स्कन्ध पुराण), Vaishnav Khand - Utkal Khand (वैष्णव खंड - उत्कल खंड). In Satyayug (सतयुग), King Indradyumn observed Lord Vishnu incarnate as a tree and then divide in four wooden forms - Jagannath, Balbhadra (बलभद्र), Subhadra (सुभद्रा) and Sudarshan Chakra (सुदर्शन चक्र). Indradyumn constructed a temple and established the four deities there. Lord Vishnu then directed King Indradyumn to arrange a procession carrying these four forms in chariots from the temple to a place called Gundicha mandap (गुंडीचा मंडप) and back. The entire journey took nine days. It started during Pushya Nakshatra (पुष्य नक्षत्र); therefore, if the festival happens during Pushya Nakshatra, it is considered specially auspicious (happened in 2018).
