Akshay Triteeya (अक्षय तृतीया)

Akshay Triteeya (अक्षय तृतीया) is celebrated on the third day of the waxing moon (शुक्ल पक्ष) in the month of Vaishaakh (वैशाख) or April/May (Naradeeya Puraan, Poorv Khand, section 4, chapter 112). The word Akshay means inexhaustible. The outcome of (good) deeds done on Akshay Triteeya becomes inexhaustible and lasts forever. Worshiping Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi (लक्ष्मी) with flowers, incense and sandalwood or taking bath in the river Gangaa (गंगास्नान) is prescribed (Naradeeya PuraanPoorv Khand, section 4, chapter 112).

According to Bhavishya Puraan (Uttar Parv, chapter 30-33), the era of truth or Satyayug (सत्ययुग) began on this day. It is also the day when the next era - Tretayug (त्रेतायुग)- began (Naradeeya PuraanPoorv Khand, section 4, chapter 112). Bhavishya Puraan also states that if Akshay Triteeya falls on a Wednesday and the lunar mansion is Rohini (रोहिणी नक्षत्र), then the effect of any donations made within that period becomes inexhaustible.
