Hanuman Jayanti (हनुमान जयंती)

Hanuman Jayanti (हनुमान जयंती) is the birthday of Hanuman. It is celebrated on different days and for different duration in different parts of India.

Shiv Puraan (Shatrudra Samhita, chapter 19-20) states that Hanuman was the biological son of Lord Shiv and Anjanee (अंजनी), daughter of sage Gautam. As per Vaalmiki Raamayan (Kishkindha Kaand or part 4, 66.29-30), Hanuman was the son of Kesari (केसरी) and also of Vayu (वायु), the wind god. Kesari was the husband of Anjanee. Unable to conceive, Anjanee prayed to Vayu on Venkatachal mountain (Skandha Puraan, Vaishnav Khand-Bhumi Varaah Khand). On a full moon day, when the Sun was in Aries (मेष) and the lunar mansion was Chitraa (चित्रा नक्षत्र), Vayu promised to be born as her son. Just like wind, Lord Hanuman could assume any form and could expand or compress his size at will. When he was a kid, he once swallowed the Sun, mistaking it to be a fruit (Shiv PuraanShatrudra Samhita, chapter 19-20). When he was told that it was the Sun, he spit it out. The swallowing of the Sun may be symbolic rather than literal. Dust storms or clouds blocking the rays of the Sun completely may be poetically described as engulfing or swallowing the Sun. It is not hard to imagine that Hanuman, the wind God, is capable of creating great storms or clouds like that.

After the incident, his mother instructed him to seek Sun's blessings and learn valuable knowledge from the Sun. Hanuman did the same and became very knowledgeable as a result.
