Navraatri (नवरात्रि) and Mahanavmi (महानवमी)

Navraatri (नवरात्रि) is a nine day celebration to worship the nine forms of Durga (दुर्गा), the divine mother. The eighth (अष्टमी) and the ninth (नवमी) day of the waning moon (शुक्ल पक्ष) in the month of Aashwin (आश्विन) or September/October are especially auspicious for Devi worship (Bhavishya PuranUttar Parv, chapter 138). This worship became popular after the incarnation of the Devi as the daughter of Yasoda, the foster mother of Shri Krushn.

When the Sun is in the zodiac of Virgo and the nakshatra (नक्षत्र) or lunar mansion on the eighth day of the waning moon in the month of Aashwin is Mool (मूल), the date is called Mahanavmi (महानवमी) and is a very auspicious time (Agni Puraan, chapter 185).

The nine forms of Goddess Durga namely Rudrachandaa (रुद्रचण्डा), Prachandaa (प्रचण्डा), Chandogra (चण्डोग्रा), Chandnayikaa (चण्डनायिका), Chandaa (चण्डा ), Chandavati (चण्डवती), Poojya (पूज्या ), Chandaroopa (चण्डरूपा) and Atichandika (अतिचण्डिका) should be placed in order and worshiped using the following ten syllable (दशाक्षर) mantra (Agni Puraan, chapter 185, 5-6):

ॐ दुर्गे दुर्गे रक्षिणी स्वाहा |

Agni Puraan (chapter 185, 11) recommends worshiping the goddess in the night using the following mantra (verse 14-15).

जयंती मंगला काली भद्रकाली कपालिनी |
दुर्गा शिवा क्षमा धात्री स्वाहा स्वधा नमोःस्तुते ||
