Raam Navmi (राम नवमी)

Raam Navmi (राम नवमी) is the day to celebrate the birth of Lord Raam. As per Vaalmeeki Raamaayan (Baal Kaand or canto 1, chapter 18, 8-11) and Padma Puraan (Uttar Khand), it happened on the ninth day (नवमी) of the waxing moon (शुक्ल पक्ष) in the month of Chaitra (March/April). He was born under the lunar mansion or nakshatra (नक्षत्र) called Punarvasu (पुनर्वसु), the ruling deity of which is Aditi (अदिति). It is noteworthy that Punarvasu nakshatra is denoted by bow and arrow, Lord Raam's weapon of choice. In his zodiac, five major planets were in high positions and Jupiter as well as Moon were conjunct while Cancer (कर्क) was ascendant. Valmeeki Raamaayan states that Raam was one half of Lord Vishnu. In other words, he was an avatar of Lord Vishnu. At the time of birth, Raam had resplendent eyes, long hands, reddish lips and drum like deep voice.

Lord Raam was born in the afternoon (Padma Puraan, Uttar Khand), in a city called Ayodhya (अयोध्या). His father was King Dasrath and mother was Queen Kausalya. The family belonged to the solar dynasty (सूर्यवंश). Their forefathers include Raghu, Dileep, Sagar, Bhagirath (brought river Gangaa to the Earth), Harishchandra (famous for his truthfulness), Iksvaaku (इक्ष्वाकु), Sainaihschar (rules planet Saturn) and Yam (deity of death and brother of Yamuna, the deity associated with river Yamunaa). The lineage goes all the way to sage Kashyap (कश्यप) and his wife Aditi (Padma Puraan, Shristi Khand).
