Vijay Dashmi (विजय दशमी)

Vijay Dashmi (विजय दशमी) or Dashahara (दशहरा) is a celebration of the victory of Lord Raam (राम) over the demon king Raavan (रावण). It is celebrated on the tenth day (दशमी) of the waning moon cycle in the month of Aashvin (आश्विन) or September/October (Naaradiya Puraan, part 4). The festival comes right after the nine day celebration of Goddess Durga (दुर्गा) called Navraatri (नवरात्रि).

Although Vijay Dashmi is also known as Dashahara, Naardiya Puraan (part 4) gives another version of Dashahara, according to which Dashahara is the day when river Gangaa came to earth from the heaven. There was a tenfold combination of events at that time namely the month of Jyesth (ज्येष्ठ) or May/June, waxing moon phase (शुक्ल पक्ष), Hast nakshatra (नक्षत्र) or lunar mansion, Budhwar (बुधवार) or Wednesday, tenth day of the lunar phase (दशमी), gar karan (गर करण), aanand yog (आनंद योग), vayatipaat (व्यत्तिपात), the Moon in the zodiac of Virgo and the Sun in the zodiac of Taurus. This combination is considered greatly auspicious and believed to destroy ten sins. The day is therefore referred to as Dashahara.
